大方得體

在老布殊的喪禮上，前美國國務卿、白宮幕僚長貝克（James Baker）在悼詞裏讚揚老布殊是a beacon of humility and decency。這裏說的humility是謙虛；至於decency，這字有幾個解法，在這裏是指待人處事的正當品格，很難找到一個完全和它對應的簡單的中文詞語。

不懂或沒有decency的人，大概可以形容為「沒品」。以下例子或許有助說明decency的內涵。

一、Decency, not fear of punishment, caused them to do the right thing.（他們行為正當，因為他們知道是非，不是因為害怕受罰。）

二、If you're going to be late, please have the decency to call and let me know.（如果你要遲到，請你懂得應該給我通知一聲。）

三、Decency demanded that they help the old lady with her groceries.（按待人之道，他們應該幫那位老太太拿她買了的東西。）

四、She showed a total lack of decency when she wore a short red dress to her mother's funeral.（她穿着一條紅色短裙出席母親的喪禮，顯得完全沒品。）

五、My neighbour has no sense of decency; he offen walks around naked in his backyard.（我的鄰居真失禮，經常光着身子在院子裏徘徊。）

說幾個decency的近義詞。首先有civility，是講禮貌、對人尊重。

六、I hope we can treat each other with civility and respect.（希望我們互相待以禮貌和尊重。）

七、Civility is a casualty of political debate.（政治辯論都不講禮貌了。）

八、How can one expect civility during these times when so many movies are filled with disrespectful and cursing characters?（現在很多電影都充斥着不禮貌和說骯話的角色，怎能期望我們的社會講斯文呢？）

另一個字decorum，是禮貌得體、端莊穩重，懂得在不同的場合有怎樣的表現，這和上面例四和例五中的decency接近。

九、You should behave with decorum at the funeral.（你應在那喪禮上保持莊重。）

十、He went out with impressive decorum, and spoiled it by slamming the door.（他離開房間時很斯文，但走出房門卻大力地關門，那便失禮了。）

十一、Although she was upset she did not win the contest, she maintained decorum and congratulated the winner.（她輸了比賽雖然很不開心，但保持大方得體，祝賀勝出者。）

另一個和decency很接近的字是propriety，也是指行為恰當、有分寸。這個字現在多用來指公眾人物應當遵守的規矩。

十二、His sense of political propriety forbade him from stooping to personal attacks.（他有政治操守，不會墮落至作人身攻擊。）

十三、We expected the president to have a great sense of propriety and we were all shocked when his wrongdoings became public knowledge.（我們都認為總統應該有很好的是非觀念；當他的胡作非為被揭發時，大家都十分震驚。）

最後說說dignity；這字本來解作尊嚴，但也可用來指人在特殊的處境或場合能夠掌握分寸；最常見的例子就像以下這一句：

十四、The losing team showed a great deal of dignity when they cheered as their opponents accepted the trophy.（落敗了的隊伍在對手領獎時喝采，顯得十分大方。）

如果每個人都多一點decency、civility、decorum、propriety和dignity，社會便會更和諧。
