誤以為真

美國總統特朗普可能是被人加上最多貶損性形容詞的政治人物。最近一個經濟學者寫的評論文章，用delusional這個字來形容特朗普。那是指他經常有幻覺，例如以為自己十分了不起。名詞delusion，是幻覺、錯覺、妄想；譬如說：

一、He is living under the delusion that he is incapable of making mistakes.（他有一種錯覺，以為自己永不會犯錯。）

二、He has delusions about how much money he can make at that job.（他有一個幻覺，以為做那份工作能賺很多錢。）

跟delusion很接近的一個字是illusion，也是解作錯覺或錯誤的觀念。上面兩句裏的delusion都可以換作illusion，意思差不多。又如：

三、I have no illusions about her feelings for me.（我對她跟我的感情不抱幻想。）

這即是說，我不會誤以為她對我很好。

四、He could no longer distinguish between illusion and reality.（他再也分不清幻想與現實了。）

雖然兩字在很多情況下可以交換使用，但delusion和illusion還是有分別的。Delusion指人思想混亂，把想像當成真實，而illusion是由客觀現象造成的錯覺。例如魔術師給汽車蓋上一張氈，把汽車變走了；大家都知道其實這只是一個假象，是an illusion；魔術師就是靠製造illusions來娛樂觀眾的。再看兩個例子：

五、They used paint to create the illusion of metal.（他們髹上油漆，令它看似金屬。）

六、She says that all progress is just an illusion.（她說所有進步都只是假象。）

還有一個很相近的字hallucination，也是幻覺的意思，但通常是指因患精神病或其他健康、藥物問題所引起的幻覺。

七、He has been having hallucinations due to the medication.（他因為服用了這種藥，一直產生幻覺。）

八、He could not tell if what he was seeing was real or if it was a hallucination.（他不知道他見到的是真的還是幻覺。）

上面說的delusion，也可叫做self-deception，自我欺騙。例如錯誤地以為自己很了不起，或者自以為很受人歡迎，都是self-deception。

九、Human beings have an infinite capacity for self-deception.（人的自欺能力是無限的。）

十、At such an age, self-deception was a means of explaining away the inevitable rule of corporal decay.（年紀大了，唯有靠自欺來解釋體能變差的必然規律了。）

十一、He had imagined that there might be a fairly emotional farewell, but the silliness of that bit of self-deception quickly became evident.（他曾經幻想會有一場頗感人的道別，但很快便認識到那是愚蠢的自欺吧了。）

另外一個比較接近illusion的字是misconception；self-deception是自我欺騙，misconception是錯誤的觀念。

十二、I lent my cousin money under the misconception that he would repay me.（我借錢給堂兄弟，誤以為他會還給我。）

十三、The secretary said there were public misconceptions about prosecution policy.（司長說公眾對檢控政策有錯誤的認識。）

人類有很多對客觀世界的misconceptions，都被科學推翻了，例如以為地球是平的就曾經是一個misconception，錯誤的觀念。
