待人以禮

上集談及的offensive and insulting language，議會裏不能用，日常與人相處，也應盡量避免；禮貌和尊重是待人之道。有禮貌是polite，可形容人，如a polite young man有禮貌的年輕人；也可形容言行，如a polite nod禮貌的點頭，a polite reply客氣的回應。

一、We should be polite to our guests.（我們對客人要有禮貌。）

二、Everybody was too polite to take a seat.（人人都很客氣，沒有人坐下。）

有時polite也可表示沒有誠意的客氣，例如polite applause（禮貌的鼓掌）；a polite excuse（禮貌的解釋或借口）；polite conversation（客套的談話）。又如：

三、He said he enjoyed my performance but I knew it was a polite lie.（他說很喜歡我的演出，不過我知道他只是客氣，不是說真話。）

例二和三裏的polite是「客氣」；但如果要說「不要客氣」，不能說“Don't be polite”；在各種場合表示「不要客氣」，有不同的恰當說法，這裏不談。

以上各例句中的polite，都可以用courteous代替，雖然polite較常用；courteous也是有禮貌，通常並帶有尊敬的意思，如a courteous young man是有禮貌、態度恭敬的年輕人。

和courteous相關有兩個名詞，courteousness和courtesy；courteousness與politeness同義：

四、We should treat our guests with courteousness/politeness.（我們要以禮待客。）

這裏的courteousness也可換作courtesy；但courtesy還有若干特別的用法，例如指一項禮貌的行為：

五、By extending the courtesy of a phone call to me clients, I built a personal relationship with them.（通過打電話這個禮貌行為，我和客戶建立個人關係。）

詞語courtesy of有以下用法：

六、The questionnaire is reproduced here courtesy of the author.（經作者同意，該問卷複製在此。）

七、The waitress served champagne, courtesy of the hotel.（女侍應送上香檳，是酒店招待的。）

禮節性拜訪叫courtesy call或courtesy visit；酒店免費接送住客的穿梳巴士，叫courtesy shuttle。這裏courtesy是形容詞。

以下幾個都是polite的近義詞：civil、cordial、respectful、deferential和diplomatic，表示不同性質的禮貌；civil指的禮貌，可能是勉強的、冷漠的：

八、As visitors we had to be civil to the people in their own land.（作為外來人，我們要對當地人客氣一點。）

九、She's so annoying that it takes a lot of patience to remain civil to her.（她很討厭，對她保持禮貌需要很大的耐性。）

Cordial是courteous加friendly，有親切熱誠的意思；例如a cordial reception是熱情的接待，一些正式的邀請會說We cordially invite you 或 You are cordially invited。

Respectful是尊敬地有禮；deferential則是誇張的、過分的恭敬：

十、Everybody made a respectful（也可說polite或courteous）bow to the chairman before sitting down.（人人在坐下前先向主席禮貌地鞠躬。）

十一、He expects to be respected, but he won't like it if you're too deferential.（他要人尊重，但不喜歡你過分恭敬。）

最後，diplomatic是「外交式」的禮貌：小心謹慎，避免說錯話開罪人，如：

十二、You were too direct when talking to your boss; I would have been more diplomatic.（你對老闆說話太直率了；我會圓滑一點。）
