細說因由

政府官員的職責之一，是向立法會議員解釋政府的政策。表示解釋，最常用的動詞是explain。

一、The Secretary explained the new policy to the legislators.（局長向議員解釋新政策。）

二、Let me explain the rules of the game to you.（讓我給你們解釋遊戲規則。）

如果在解釋後，對方仍不太明白，或會要求clarify（澄清），即把模糊的地方說清楚，或者就某個論點再闡述；to clarify a problem/an issue（澄清某個問題）。

三、We asked him to clarify what he meant.（我們叫他把他的意思說清楚。）

四、I hope this clarifies my position.（我希望這澄清了我的立場。意即：我這樣說明我的立場，清楚了吧？）

表示把問題解釋得再詳細一點，也可以說elaborate。如例三和例四所示，clarify通常用作及物動詞；但elaborate用來表示詳細解釋時，是不及物的，後面跟着preposition，如on、upon或about。

五、He did not elaborate on his reasons for resigning.（他沒有詳細解釋他辭職的原因。）

六、Can you elaborate on（或about）your proposal?（你可以再詳細點解釋你的建議嗎？）

當elaborate用作及物動詞的時候，意思是給簡單的東西加上細節，使它變得豐富、複雜。

七、She went on to elaborate her argument.（她接着展開她提出的論點。）

八、They were charged with elaborating the new constitution.（他們負責詳細制訂新憲法。）

和elaborate相近的字還有expound，也是詳細地解釋或說明的意思。

九、He expounded his views on the subject at great length.（他很詳細地闡述了他在這問題上的觀點。）

在上面這一句中，his views兩字可以略去：He expounded on the subject at great length，意思也是一樣；這用法跟例五和例六裏的elaborate相同。

另一個動詞enlighten，也是說明、解釋的意思；enlighten someone是向某人解釋。

十、Will someone please enlighten me as to how to operate this machine?（有誰可以給我解釋，這機器是怎樣操作的？）

我們用interpret這字，很多時是指傳譯、翻譯，譬如兩人溝通時用的語言不同，便可能需要一個傳譯員，an interpreter。

其實interpret亦可以指解釋，說明某件事或某句話的意思。

十一、The students were asked to interpret the poem.（學生要解釋這首詩的意思。）

十二、Your words can be interpreted as a threat.（你這樣說，可被理解為對某人的恐嚇。意即：你的話等於恐嚇。）

「人大釋法」的「釋」，也可作interpret；解釋法律叫interpret the law。

十三、The power to interpret the Basic Law is vested in the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.（《基本法》的解釋權屬於全國人民代表大會常務委員會。）

十四、In the common law system, only the court has the power to interpret the law.（在普通法制度下，只有法庭有權解釋法律。）

還有一個在解釋時常用的字，是define，即定義或界定，把某些說法的含義說明清楚。

十五、Please define yourself more clearly.（請你把意思說得更清楚。）

十六、We must clearly define our responsibilities in the agreement.（我們必須在合約上清楚說明我們的責任。）
