Breaking into the Lab卷首即說了個帶血故事,時為一九七五年,Rosser已為post-doc,剛懷了第二胎,告之於上司(當然不巧又是個男的),彼冷冷道:Get an abortion! 書中往後更說了種種制度上的詭異偏心,漠視女性在家庭和學術上的dual career,如time management、isolation、lack of camaraderie、poor mentoring、gaining credibility and respectability from colleagues and superiors等等難題。 Rosser不會喜歡Lawrence Summers,自然沒有着墨於兩性間的innate and biological differences, if any。
我想多了,不在為Lawrence翻案,卻因我記得Rosser年前編了本視野更寬更廣的大書叫Women, Science, and Myth,裏邊有一小節很啟迪人心,探討的是co-evolution of myths of gender and science,點出beliefs about gender會影響科學理論的發展傳承。
